[br][br]ARTHUR SAMUEL. DORAN, DMD
1919-2013
Arthur S. "Art" Doran, Bellevue, WA, passed away peacefully in the evening of April 18, 2013. After an unexpected and short two week illness, he succumbed to a pulmonary embolism, a consequence of metastasis cancer. A sweet dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he was surrounded and comforted by a loving family and special friends throughout. At 94, Art was still active, speedy with his walker, full of fun and got great pleasure in telling his special jokes whenever he found an open ear. His good humor never wavered. He will be forever remembered and sorely missed. A move in Nov. 2011 from Vancouver, WA to Bellevue with his wife, Kay, was a significant choice to be near his family sharing many happy Holidays and special occasions.
Art was born in San Francisco and raised in Toppenish and Yakima, WA by his parents Mary Ellen (Stone) and Edmond Leonard Doran. An avid outdoor sportsman, he enjoyed years of hunting and fishing being especially adept at fly casting for trout in the waters of Washington, Montana and Alaska. Among his hunting trophies were a high mountain goat and a black bear. Many bird hunting trips were with his talented mother who taught him how to shoot and handle guns safely. He was a fearless skier on the mountains of Washington.
Art's enjoyment and success of his practice of dentistry, teaching and military service were most evident throughout his life. Art graduated from Yakima High in 1938, attended Yakima Jr. College, WSU and graduated from North Pacific Dental School Portland, OR in 1943 with his DMD degree. During WII, as a 1st Lt. Army Reserve, his first duty was on a troop ship bound for Italy, Interestingly he had worked on this ship, built at the Portland Shipyards while attending dental school. He returned to Ft Lewis, WA in 1945 and was discharged from the Army in 1946. During that time he met Kathryn N "Kay" Small of Olympia. Their love for one another bloomed into their marriage on January 25, 1947 in Olympia. Over the years their family added 4 wonderful children.
Recalled back to active duty in 1949 (Korean conflict) Art transferred to the USAF Dental Services as a Capt. to begin an Air Force military career. The first assignment was at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas and after 30 years service the final assignment was at Barksdale AFB Shreveport, LA where he retired in 1970 as a Colonel. Many interesting tours of duty included taking the family to Guam, Japan, and Air Bases in Alabama, Louisiana, Kansas, Oregon and Washington State. During this time he also attended Post Graduate courses at the Illinois Dental School at Chicago and Texas Dental School Houston 1959 qualifying him Board Certified in Prosthodontics.
After AF retirement, Art taught at University of Washington, Prosthodontics Dept. for one year then transferred to EWSU Cheney, WA as Assist Professor for the 4 year Dental Hygiene Program. His students truly enjoyed him, appreciating his full attention and readiness to help. He practiced Prosthodontics in Spokane until retiring in1984.
In 1999 Art and Kay moved to Vancouver, WA then on to Bellevue in 2011. No matter where Art went or what he did, he thoroughly enjoyed his life, his friends and taking good care of his dear family. He gave many smiles to all.
Art was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Dental fraternity and in 1961 was given a National Historian's Award. He was a Life member of ADA; WSDA; Spokane Dental Society; Military Officer's Assoc. of America and belonged to Spokane Fly Fishing Club.
Art is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; Daughter, Gretchen (fiancé, Joseph); Sons, Lenn (Nancy), Phillip and Gregory; Grandchildren, Erik Doran, Joel Kern (friend Donna); Justin Kern, Jillian Skillman (Jeffrey); Gracie Johnson (Chris), Annie Doran.(fiancé, Shaunte);
Great-grandchildren, Jace and Jordin Skillman, and former daughter-in-law, Laney Doran,
A Military Honor Ceremony will be held Thursday, June 20, 2013, 11:15 am at the Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St, Kent, Washington
There will be "A Celebration of Life" Reception on Sunday, June 30, 2013 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm at the Bellevue Hilton Hotel, 300 112th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98004.

gerber, max(bill) w
[br][br]Mr. Gerber went to be with the Lord, at the age of 78, on April 9, 2013. He passed in the Diamond Point home he had loved so much and which he had designed, over looking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The cause of death was metastatic malignant melanoma.
He was born in Jackson, Michigan but raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and Wenatchee, Washington. He graduated from Wenatchee Valley College with an AA in pre-architecture before entering the University of Washington. There, he pledged the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He married his sweetheart from Wenatchee, Jane Moore, while attending college. He also joined the Marine Corps Reserve during that time. A service connected injury forced him to change majors and he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he became a commissioned officer and went on active duty, leaving the Marine Corps in 1967, having attained the rank of Captain.
As a civilian, Mr. Gerber worked in the insurance, investment, marketing, and travel industries. He also spent several years as the Executive Director of the North Central Washington Supervised Skills non-profit corporation in Wenatchee. Under his leadership, the once small and unsuccessful agency grew into one of the largest and most successful facilities of its kind in the state, employing 20 full and part-time staff and and serving 120 clients in three separate programs which provided rehabilitation services and vocational training to adult handicapped clients. During his years with the Citizen Ambassador program of People to People International, he traveled extensively and organized conferences which enabled experts in various professions, from many different countries, to meet and exchange information and ideas. Three of his favorite destinations were China, Hong Kong, and Russia.
He and Jane raised their two sons in Wenatchee. They divorced in 1977 but remained friends until her death in 1991. He married Phyllis Kilmer in 1981. They lived in Spokane until 2004 when they retired to Diamond Point, an area just east of Sequim. He had always loved the ocean, lighthouses, forests and mountains. Sequim was close to all those things and that fact was one of the main reasons he chose to retire there.
At various times in his life, he was a church elder, a committee chairman for the Boy Scouts, a Kiwanis Club President, a member of the School Board Advisory Committee, and a Little League Baseball coach. He was also an active member of the Christian Business Men's Connection and was a past-chairman of the Spokane chapter.
He had loved hiking and fishing as a young man but over the years his health gradually deteriorated. Problems in his spine progressed and severely affected his mobility. Pain was his constant companion. As he was no longer able to participate in more athletic activities, he changed course and spent his leisure time collecting miniature lighthouses and ship models, reading, doing crossword puzzles and was known for his especially green thumb. His house was filled with over 60 beautiful houseplants which he lovingly nurtured. He enjoyed rescuing neglected plants and bringing them back into a healthy state. He took great pleasure from watching the small boats, the ships, the constantly changing water conditions, the deer, and the local birds. He particularly enjoyed keeping track of the bald eagles and a special seagull named "Louie". He enjoyed following the exploits of his two favorite sports teams, the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners.
He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments, especially enjoying visits as well as long phone conversations with his children. One of his favorite local activities was interacting with a group of men, mostly veterans, who would meet for coffee in Sequim once a week. They had a wonderful fellowship, supported each other, bragged about their children, and tried to solve the world's problems. He was a member of the Olympic Swiss Club and enjoyed exploring his Swiss heritage and hearing stories of the country in which his grandparents were born.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Phyllis; his two sons Brad of Maple Valley and Jeff of Everett; his three step-children, Scott of Pasco, Dawn and David of Spokane; grandchildren Cody, Alyssa, Jraven, Mick, and Vivianna; step-grandchildren Cheyenne, Charlie, Christina; and step-great-grandchild Matthias. He is also survived by his brother Robert of Indian Wells, CA; nephew Doug; and nieces Cris and Cindy.
Mr. Gerber requested that there be no formal funeral and that his ashes be scattered in the ocean. There will be a family celebration of life later this year.

A son, a brother, an uncle and father, it's only been one year and it seems like yesterday. We have only our memories and good times we all shared with you. You are missed by all you touched while in the short time you were here on earth, but know you are watching over us all from above. It gives us all some comfort that you are not alone. You were greeted at the pearly gates by our loving mother and sister.
We will all meet again but until then you will always be in our hearts and memories.
