
[br][br]Margaret Soderberg, also known as Peg Frederking and Maggie Campbell, was born in Spokane to Helmuth and Elynor Frederking and grew up in College Place, graduating from Walla Walla High School in 1954. She Graduated from Eastern Washington College of Education (Eastern Washington University) in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and later attained a Master's in Education from Lesley College. She was married twice, to James W. Campbell (1958 - 1976) and Richard H. Soderberg (1978 - 1983).
Ms. Soderberg was a life-long educator. She began her teaching career in Brewster in 1958 and relocated to Spokane in 1959. She taught at North Central High School (1959 - 1960) and Libby Junior High (1961 - 1965) before settling in at Sacajawea Middle School where she was Chair of the Language Arts Department for more than 20 years. At the time she retired in 2002, Ms. Soderberg was the longest tenured active teacher in School District 81. She primarily taught language arts and throughout her career was also advisor for several scholastic activities, such as the student newspaper, yearbook and drill team. She also led over 15 student trips to Washington D.C.
Ms. Soderberg enjoyed an active retirement. She was a member of the Red Hats Society, the Inland Empire Iris Society, and the Spokane Tawanka Alumni Association; she was serving as President of the latter two at the time of her death. In addition to enjoying her large circle of friends she loved to read, cook, garden and travel. She was also known to drop a few coins in area slot machines.
Ms. Soderberg is survived by her two sons, Keith Campbell of Kettle Falls and Dan Campbell of Redmond; grandson Brandon Campbell of Marysville; great grandchildren Ethan and Lyla Campbell; sisters Kathryn Grundmeier of Wilsaw, Montana and Charlotte Frederking of Puyallup; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both ex-husbands; her parents; brothers Norman Foster, John Frederking and Richard Frederking; and sister Barbara Carlyle.
A celebration of Margaret's life will be held in the ballroom at the Northern Quest Hotel and Resort in Airway Heights on March 8, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her honor to the EWU Foundation, 102 Hargreaves Hall, Cheney, WA 99004.
