IN MEMORIAM JUNE SUMMERS ...

In Memoriam JUNE SUMMERS (1918-2013) Was born June 24, 1918 in Henderson, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Walter and Selma Helle. At age four, she moved with her family to the town of Hillyard, WA. She was close to her extended family and returned to Henderson every summer. Her father worked as a carpenter at Great Northern Rail Yards. She attended Regal Elementary, Rogers High School and Spokane Junior College. She earned a Masters certificate in teaching in 1941 from the College of Education in Cheney. She was a lifelong scholar and was nicknamed "Webster" (the walking Dictionary). She wrote history books on Hillyard and Spokane Junior College, which was located on 29th Avenue. She married Arthur Summers on May 17, 1941. Arthur was drafted off the Spokane Police force during WWII. He worked his career as a city letter carrier for the USPS. They raised four boys: Arthur, Glenn, Thomas, and Daniel. June taught elementary school in the Spokane Valley intermittently throughout the 1950s. She designed and contracted the building of their second house, duplex, and cabin at the lake. She was active in various clubs. She is preceded in death by her husband and son, Daniel. She is survived by her three sons, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She is interred at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
