SMITH, VIRGINIA "EDITH"

Edith Smith, Devoted Mother, Grandmother and Teacher. Virginia "Edith" Smith 101, died March 25 at Sacred Heart Hospital after being admitted due to complications with alzheimer's disease. Edith was born September 30, 1913 in Birmingham, Alabama to Dr. James Clement Smith and Valeria Strother Smith. After attending art school in Washington D.C. she returned to Birmingham to marry Robert O. Smith and to teach English, boys choir and art to underprivileged boys. In 1977 Edith and her husband Robert retired early and moved to Spokane to be closer to their daughter Sherry Tessensohn. After arriving in Spokane Edith became vary active in her community including garden club, a book group, running fund raisers for various neighborhood projects and being an active member of Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church. Edith is survived by her grandchildren, Richard David Tessensohn, Meredith Mitchelle Tessensohn, her sister Dorris Rae Allen and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her daughter Sherry and her son in law Bernard Tessensohn. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 18, at 1:00 P.M. at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church where donations can be made as well.
